How do I tell what type siding I have, and what do I do if it is defective?

There have been many different types of siding available to the homebuilder over the years, some of which have proven to be less than adequate for long term exposure to the elements.  Although the claim from some manufacturers is that the problem is not in the product, but rather that it was installed incorrectly, the home buyer nevertheless has been confronted with the need to know what siding is on their house, and what they can do about it.  If you believe you have any of the siding products listed in the links on the left,  have them inspected by a qualified inspector. He or she can help you verify the type of siding you have, the extent of the damage to this point if any, and a recommended course of action based on that assessment.
